By Crisanta Sampang

On April 17th, 2013, the Helping House opened its offshore offices in Manila, through the generosity of the Banco De Oro which provided use of the facilities free of charge.

BDO Unibank, Inc. ChairpersonTeresita Sy-Coson (fourth from left) and MHHS unite in preparing and guiding Canada-bound Filipinos

It was a major marker in the history of the MHHS, and the Philippine Asian News Today was present to document the day’s events.

Honoured guests at the inaugural ceremony included Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Christopher Thornley; Geneva T. Gloria, First Vice President & Group Head of Remittance Distribution Banco de Oro; USEC Mary Grace Tirona, Executive Director, Commission on Filipino Overseas; as well as members of the BDO Foundation Board of Directors, along with representatives from different Philippine-based international organizations for migration. The MHHS Board of Directors was represented by Demetrio Avendano, Limbay Deza-Lau, Tita Bognot, Pocholo Insua and Rene delos Santos.

This project is only the latest in a long list of services that Tatay Tom Avendano, President & CEO of the Multicultural Helping House Society had long dreamed of and now guided into reality: to inform and assist those Filipinos who are about to leave the country to live or work in Canada, by giving them the information that are usually missing from the usual info packages provided by other agencies.

Avendano says, “The services we offer here aren’t meant to replace what other Philippine offices like PDOS provide, but rather to complement them. We will fill in the gaps.” Gaps like helping the members of families of Live-in Caregivers already in Canada complete their sponsorship papers, or sharing information on settlement issues and resources available to new immigrants once they’ve landed on Canadian soil.

Everyone present congratulated the MHHS and lauded its offshore mission.

Christopher Thornley, Canada’s Ambassador to the Philippines said: “It’s a good move, especially now that the Filipinos comprise the highest number of immigrants coming into Canada. Maybe Tagalog would become one of Canada’s languages in the future.”

Ambassador Thornley encouraged the MHHS to continue doing their good work, because the more help people receive, the faster their papers get done.

Usec. Tirona with Tatay Tom

Mary Grace Tirona, Executive Director of the Commission on Filipino Overseas, told the audience that she was happy to know that the Helping House will be collaborating with PDOS by providing information as experienced and shared hands-on by immigrants.

Geneva T. Gloria, First Vice President & Group Head of Remittance Distribution Banco de Oro said: “We may have other motives in giving this opportunity to the MHHS, but first and foremost in our hearts is the desire to help the Filipinos.”

The Memorandum of Agreement between the MHHS and the BDO, which finalized the deal, was signed on the 23d of April at the main offices of the Banco De Oro at the Anvil Bldg in Makati. The BDO generously hosted the event, provided the emcee, the food and the drinks for the signing ceremony.

In conclusion, Tom Avendano expressed his gratitude towards Teresita Sy-Coson, the chairwoman of the SM department store chain and the Banco De Oro, and called her an ‘angel’ for facilitating this agreement and giving the MHHS the opportunity to serve in Manila. “Without Teresita Sy-Coson and the BDO’s help, it would have been very hard, and indeed, very expensive to achieve.”

It was, indeed, a serendipitous incident that seated Avendano beside Ms Teresita Sy-Coson, at the state dinner in the Malacanang Palace during Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to the Philippines in 2012, an evening that created history.

And if things work the way Tatay Tom Avendano and the BDO have planned together, the MHHS will be opening another office in Cebu in 2014.

The MHHS Philippine Office is located at the 5th Floor, BDO Bldg, Padre Faura St. corner A. Mabini St, Ermita, Manila.
